FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics is an international volunteer-run organization created by American inventor, Dean Kamen best known as the creator of the Segway. There are about 2,100 FIRST high school robotics teams worldwide, representing 26 different countries. FIRST Robotics inspires young minds to pursue a higher level of academic education and a career in engineering, science and technology. Involvement in FIRST promotes life-long skills and values such as teamwork, gracious professionalism, respect for diversity, inclusion and volunteerism.
Even though each team works year-round planning, the actual build season is only six weeks long, starting at the beginning of January each year. During these six weeks, students create a 120 pound robot from a kit of common parts and software. Once the build time is complete, teams “bag” their robot and prepare for the regional competition circuit vying to qualify for the world championships.
